“Ever since I finished my NQT year, my workload had steadily increased. It was really starting to get to me, and affected my home life. I wasn’t sleeping well and I often felt really stressed and irritable.
I just couldn’t seem to say ‘no’ when I was asked to take on more work or re-sponsibility. It felt like I was on a downward spiral and I don’t think I could have taken much more. I called Teacher Support Network in the hope they’d be able to help.
Talking to the counsellor seemed to make things clearer in my head. He helped me to confront why I always agreed to take on more work. My reason was that I was worried I’d be sacked if I didn’t. After talking about it, I realised this was completely unfounded. In fact, my Head of Department had approached me con-cerned about how I was coping. Of course, I wanted to impress him so I always said ‘fine’.
After my counselling sessions I decided to be honest, and have a chat about my situation with my Head. Also, the counsellor suggested I see my doctor about my difficulties sleeping. I feel much more in control now thanks to Teacher Support Network – and there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel.”
